Showmax’s new show, Untied, has officially dropped its first episode, a talk show that unpacks the complex world of divorce through the stories of famous women who have lived it. Hosted by award-winning media personality Relebogile Mabotja, the premier episode features (former) The Real Housewives of Durban star, businesswoman, and single mother Nonku Williams.
Nonku Williams On Being Untied
A novice at displaying her personal life for public consumption, Williams has never avoided discussing her highs and lows. Now, while she’s been on reality TV for years, she admits that those platforms did not necessarily capture the ‘real’ her,
“I believe everything happens for a reason, and every experience we go through has a purpose – not just for us, but for others who may find healing and hope in our stories. I felt it was time to share my story on Untied because I trust that God has a plan, and this moment is part of it. I hope my message will resonate with and bring healing to another woman who needs to hear it.”
It’s not easy to discuss something as painful and personal as divorce, but doing so requires a level of maturity and understanding, alongside trust in God, that Williams believes can guide her in helping others,
“Surrendering to His will gave me the purpose and fulfilment I needed to share my story, despite the challenges.”
A Painful Trip Down Memory Lane
Reliving your trauma, especially on an international platform, is as joyful as it sounds, but for Williams, there’s also a healing aspect to it. While the memories and triggers will always exist, speaking about them brings a sense of restoration and healing.
In fact, for Williams, there’s always a lesson amongst the pain. For instance, her divorce was a turning point in discovering her true identity and self-worth, as she realised that my marital status or external validation doesn’t determine her value and worth,
“I’ve found my identity in God, giving me a sense of purpose and freedom. I know who I am and know that I matter – not because of what others think, but because of who God is.”
Speaking more on her relationship with God, Williams explains how her spiritual journey played a significant role in guiding how she shared her truth on Untied. She adds that without the help of the Holy Spirit, she wouldn’t have been able to be so vulnerable and authentic. With God calling her to share her story, it required her to let go of my own pride and fears as it was necessary for a bigger purpose, to serve and inspire others.
“As I share my story on Untied, I hope viewers will take away the message that no matter what they’re facing, it’s not the end. It’s just a season, and with faith and perseverance, they can overcome it. My ministry is for those in their darkest moments, and I pray that my story will give them hope and reassurance that they can emerge victorious, just like I did.”
New episodes of Untied land on Showmax every Tuesday. Upcoming guests include reality star Beverly Steyn, actresses Dawn Thandeka King, Mona Monyane and Palesa Madisakwane, media personality Zandi Nhlapo, businesswoman Norma Gigaba, and model-turned-activist Sonia Booth.
