Chris Breezy, Celibacy and Church: Nkululeko Mahlangu Chats Married At First Sight Mzansi

There’s a running joke whereby any light-skinned black man with tattoos is referred to as ‘Chris Brown’, despite the musician’s troublesome patterns. Now, being compared to the individual doesn’t necessarily mean that your behaviour will mimic the singer’s. This is probably a good thing, especially if you’re on a platform where you marry a stranger, as did Showmax’s resident ‘Chris Brown’, Nkululeko Mahlangu.

Nkululeko Mahlangu: Married At First Sight Mzansi

Despite claims of which musician he physically favours, Mahlangu admits that he had difficulty finding a compatible partner. As such, he decided to leave his romantic fate in the hands of professional experts, hoping that they would pair him with his soulmate, who happens to be a stranger.

Admitting to having no expectations, Mahlangu went in knowing he ‘wouldn’t use the same old keys to open a new door’. He added that he prepared himself through constant prayer and fasting so that he wouldn’t be misled by anything encountered in the experiment.

A Godless Union?

It sounds quite jarring, but once he set eyes on Makoto Phumodi, he revealed that he was happy. However, he admittedly had concerns about whether she would be a humble and God-fearing woman – concerns that had some validity, as they were reinforced with each episode’s release. Sadly, the happy couple soon found themselves clashing, be it about his celibacy or his perceived inability to defend his wife against disparaging remarks made by other husbands.

In fact, the spats were so uncomfortable to watch that some viewers were left concerned about the impact that Phumodi was having on her new husband’s emotional health.

[My lows from being on the show] was watching my wife embarrass herself, thinking she’s belittling me, but truly ruining her own image. It breaks me to see her destroy herself like this.

That said, the experience helped him mature, and it also taught him which battles one has to fight, “I also learned silence is power,” he says, “Not every conversation needs your attention.”

However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom as Mahlangu shares that he did experience a few highs on the show, with the happy moments that he shared with his wife being his favourite.

He also adds that he enjoys watching Nelisa and Themba, despite the former’s tension with his wife, and he’s also a fan of Portia and Bongani.
