Ye At Ellis: Kanye West Returns to South Africa For A Global Culture Event

It’s certainly been an interesting year for music-based events in South Africa, especially in regards to international acts. Whether it’s 20-minute headliners or cancelled festivals, there’s never a dull moment in the South African event space, so what better way to add to the fun than with the most controversial rapper in history? Global creative icon, Ye, is set to make his long-awaited return to South Africa this December with a one-night-only live performance at Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg, on December 13. The event is set to reaffirm what promises to be one of the most significant cultural moments of the decade.

Ye’s Historic Return To South Africa

In 2013, Ye (then known as Kanye West) took over the Coca-Cola Dome as he headlined the Castle Lite Feel the Beat of Sub-zero Experience. Now he comes with a bigger discography and a completely reimagined live experience that merges music, stage architecture, and light into a monumental visual statement.

At the centre of Ellis Park, crews will construct a massive, illuminated half-dome stage – a towering sculpture of light and sound that will glow against the Johannesburg skyline.

Ye will perform on top of the dome, while spider-cams (like the above-field cameras used in sports events) will capture every move on the stage. As night falls, the dome will come alive – transforming the stadium into a vast, breathing work of art that blurs the boundaries between concert and installation.

Is Ye For Real?

Considering how abrupt the announcement was, many people had concerns about the validity of the upcoming show. Yet, following the worldwide buzz around the announcement, fans can rest assured: after a recent visit by his tour production heads to Johannesburg, the show will be unlike anything South Africa has ever seen.

“When Ye’s production team visited Ellis Park recently, they were blown away by the world-class infrastructure and scale of the venue. It truly affords Ye an unlimited canvas for his creativity. This isn’t just a concert – it’s performance art on a monumental scale and will be an unforgettable night.” – Samuel Monyake, The Monyake Group

The Monyake Group has produced several world-class, milestone live experiences in South Africa, including recent sold-out events with celebrated US gospel artists Naomi Raine and Chandler Moore, and they’re working hard to ensure the safety of each concertgoer.
